Mitochondria – the energy centers of cells
Mitochondria are small organelles inside the cells of the body. Important steps of so-called cellular respiration take place in them. In this process, energy from nutrients is converted into a form that cells can use for their various tasks: the molecule ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
ATP is considered the universal energy unit of the body. When it is converted, energy is released that is needed for processes such as muscle work, nerve activity or general metabolic processes. Many cells have a number of mitochondria to meet their energy needs.
Within these metabolic processes, reactive oxygen compounds are also produced, which are among the natural by-products of cellular respiration. The body has various mechanisms to remain in balance with these substances.
Research into mitochondria has made great progress in recent decades. It deals, among other things, with how these organelles are structured, how they provide energy and how they are involved in the complex interaction of cell functions.
