Depot effect for calcium metabolism and bone health
The depot effect of Pro Vitamin D3 10.000 primarily benefits calcium metabolism and bone health when used as recommended (1 capsule every 10 days). According to current studies, a daily intake is necessary for all non-calcemic effects and thus a full spectrum of vitamin D effects. A distinction is made between vitamin D formed in the liver and kidneys with an endocrine effect via the bloodstream and vitamin D formed locally in the cells with an autocrine effect (in the same cell) or paracrine effect (in neighbouring target cells).
Vitamin D from liver and kidney for calcium regulation
In particular, the studies re-evaluate the importance of the vitamin D precursor cholecalciferol. Cholecalciferol is the actual "vitamin D3" – the form that is formed in the skin with the help of sunlight or ingested with food. However, the body cannot do much with it yet.
Cholecalciferol is first converted in the liver into the prohormone calcidiol (25(OH)D). Vitamin D circulates in the blood in this form. Calcidiol is the most common and, with a half-life of two to three weeks, the longest-lived form of vitamin D in the body. It is considered a storage form and is used in blood tests to determine the vitamin D level. The form of vitamin D that is actually effective in the body is the hormone calcitriol (1,25(OH)2D), which is produced in the kidneys from the prohormone calcidiol when there is demand.
The calcitriol produced in this way is needed by the body primarily for the regulation of calcium metabolism and thus for bone health.
Local Vitamin D for everything but calcium
Now, vitamin D has numerous other, so-called non-calcemic areas of action outside of calcium metabolism, especially in the immune system. Many cells are able to produce the locally required calcitriol themselves. For this purpose, they resort to cholecalciferol, which, unlike calcidiol from the liver, circulates unbound in the blood and enters the cells by simple diffusion. There, it is first converted into calcidiol and then into the locally effective calcitriol. However, cholecalciferol in the blood is very short-lived, its half-life is just 24 hours. Consequently, vitamin D can only fulfil its numerous non-calcemic tasks if cholecalciferol, i.e. vitamin D3, is supplied daily.
For all vitamin D functions besides calcium regulation, the body would thus need new cholecalciferol from the skin or from food every day.
Vitamin D3, K2 and A: The combination makes the difference!
There are a number of combination products with vitamin D3 and K2, and for good reason: together, the two vitamins do real work for the bones. They ensure that calcium is transported from the intestine into the blood and from there into the bones and teeth. Vitamin K2 activates special proteins that transport the mineral into the target cells and at the same time keep it out of the blood vessels.
But only vitamin A completes the trio. In interaction with vitamin D3, it not only controls the synthesis of these proteins, but also other functions of the body, for example in the immune system. They complement, strengthen and regulate each other. When taking vitamin D3, the other two should therefore not be neglected.
